![]() ![]() The kinematic viscosity is the normalized dynamic viscosity to density. There is a strong relationship between Reynolds number and kinematic viscosity, which we will examine next. When the kinematic viscosity value is known, the Reynolds number can be calculated using the equation in the middle. When the density and absolute or dynamic viscosity is known, the first equation on the right hand side of the above equation can be used. In the above equation, it is shown that both absolute or dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity are involved in the calculation of the Reynolds number. Commonly used units of kinematic viscosity are ft2/s and Stoke (St). The SI unit of kinematic viscosity is m2/s. Kinematic viscosity - The ratio of absolute or dynamic viscosity to density is called kinematic viscosity. It is an indicator of a fluid’s internal resistance to flow. Viscosity is the fluid’s resistance to flow, and expresses the measure of a fluid’s resistance to the slow deformation caused by shear or tensile stress.Ībsolute or dynamic viscosity - The absolute or dynamic viscosity measures the tangential force per unit area required to slide one horizontal layer with respect to another layer that is spaced at a unit distance in the fluid at a unit velocity. When a fluid is in motion, it experiences a resistance called shear resistance due to the inter-molecular friction between the layers of the fluid. In fluid dependent systems, viscosity influences the fluid behavior and fluid motion. Reynolds Number and the Viscosity of a Fluid Note that is the density of the fluid, is the velocity of the fluid, l is the characteristic length or hydraulic diameter of the fluid flow, is the dynamic or absolute viscosity of the fluid, and v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Mathematically, the Reynolds number can be given by the following equation: ![]() ![]() It reveals the effect of fluid viscosity in controlling the flow pattern or velocity of the fluid. It can also be interpreted as the ratio of dynamic pressure to shearing stress. Reynolds number is the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces, and this number categorizes fluid systems. Reynolds numbers with a value of less than 2300 indicate a laminar flow of the fluid. As the Reynolds number increases above 4000, the fluid flow becomes turbulent. When the Reynolds number is between 23, the fluid flow is transitional. Fluid can be gas or liquid, and the value of the Reynolds number determines whether the flow is laminar or turbulent. Generally, the Reynolds number is a dimensionless measurement that describes the degree of laminar or turbulent fluid flow. In this article, we will explore the relationship between the Reynolds number and the kinematic viscosity. Reynolds number is dependent on several fluid properties such as density, velocity, and viscosity, and this number shares an inversely proportional relationship with the kinematic and dynamic viscosity. The range of Reynolds numbers indicate the degree of laminar or turbulent flow. To identify the flow type, engineers depend on a dimensionless quantity called the Reynolds number. With these simulations, a clear understanding of the flow regime as well as its paths and velocities can be obtained. The flow behavior of such systems can be analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In systems influenced by fluid flow, it is important to analyze the fluid dynamics in order to quantify their effect. In the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili printed by Aldus Manutius there is at least one page with five hyphens in succession: two diagonal, two horizontal, and one diagonal. Four in a row can be found not only in the Gutenberg Bible, but in such other celebrated books as the Nuremberg Chronicle (1492) printed by Anton Koberger, the polyglot Bible (1569–1572) of Christopher Plantin, and the Médailles sur les Principaux Evenements du Règne de Louis le Grand (1702) set in the Romain du Roi. No one seemed to be overly concerned with the number of hyphenated lines in a row. Jenson, Ratdolt and Aldus used angled but single hyphens, while the latter also introduced the horizontal hyphen we know today. Yet, hyphens continued to be essential for line breaks, though hanging hyphens disappeared because they made composing metal type more complicated. They realized that, unlike scribes, they could achieve justification by distributing space within a line. ![]() While Gutenberg used an enormous character set to achieve a consistent texture, subsequent printers dispensed with most of the ligatures, abbreviations and alternate forms as unnecessary. Note how the hyphens hung in the margins as well as the use of ligatures (e.g., colatis in line 1) and abbreviations (e.g., Regnate in line 7) to achieve justification with even word spacing. įig.1: Detail of page from the B42 Bible of Johannes Gutenberg (1455). In the design and use of his hyphens Gutenberg had solved some of the problems that confront modern typographers. Consequently, the pages of the Gutenberg Bible are beautiful. His hyphens are angled double lines and, remarkably, they are hung in the margin. And, like the scribes, Gutenberg employed hyphens to link words across lines. This meant that his character set included numerous ligatures, abbreviations, and alternate narrow letters that enabled his columns of text to be justified and yet have close and consistent word spacing. In producing his Bible, Johann Gutenberg copied medieval scribal practices as well as the textura of local German manuscripts. From the 8th century onward the hyphen was used as a consistent sign to correct an inappropriately placed space in separated writing, including words broken across a line. According to Paul Saenger, author of Space between Words: The Origins of Silent Reading (1997), it was introduced, along with other diacritical signs and marks of punctuation, into Latin writing in the late 2nd century or the 3rd century when the Romans adopted the Greek style of scriptura continua. The hyphen was originally invented by the Greeks to aid the reader to overcome ambiguity in scriptura continua (writing without word spaces). They try to minimize the number of hyphens in a row at the end of lines in justified text setting. They turn off hyphenation when setting text flush left, rag right. Yet, it elicits loathing among many contemporary graphic designers. The hyphen is an unprepossessing character. Most of those larger issues will be ignored in order to keep this essay from becoming a novel. Thus, as with anything involving typography, it turns out that even something as humble as the hyphen is inextricably linked to larger issues. In turn, that investigation threatened to lead to others as it became clear that language, typeface choice, point size, line length and paragraphing styles influenced the quality of these two text formatting approaches. This essay began as an inquiry into contemporary hyphenation practices in books and magazines, but quickly spread to include an investigation of the history of justified and flush left, rag right settings. Plus, he addresses the modern-day aversion to hyphens in the design world. ![]() ![]() Paul Shaw investigates the history of justified, flush left, and rag right settings, and takes a look at contemporary hyphenation practices. ![]() Register today for the free course “ 5 Skills Every Design Needs to Know. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Result: the endless pop-ups prompting me for credentials continues. 0:00 / 2:27 How to Setup SourceTree on Windows Learning Programming Tutorial 23.8K subscribers Subscribe 14K views 5 years ago Programming Tools Installing the SourceTree GUI on Windows. That’s a 50% reduction over the best outcome you can expect with rectangular ducts! Because it is practically airtight, and with many options for coupling and sealing the end-to-end joints, spiral ducts can often have as little as 1 to 2 percent overall air leakage. But through meta analysis in the HVAC industry, the spiral-seamed duct came into being. With some improved methods for connections, a rectangular system might have as little as 3 to 4 percent leakage. For many years, it was difficult to obtain less than 10 percent leakage in rectangular ductwork. The second efficiency advantage of spiral ductwork over rectangular is that air loss is much less with spiral. Smaller surface area means less resistance to air flow and less strain on the air handler. Screws are kept to a minimum due to fewer and better sealing joints. The seams are on the outside and there are no square corners or creases, providing a smoother surface for the air to travel. ![]() Why Spiral is Better: In a spiral duct, there is no internal seam to restrict air flow. When that happens, efficiency goes down, and the life expectancy of the components is also decreased. Yes, but it makes the air handler – or fan – that is pushing the air work harder. These all increase the static pressure inside your HVAC system. So here are at least four types of restriction that meets the air flowing through rectangular ducts: seams, creases, screws and greater surface area. Even if all else were equal – which it is not – the surface area of rectangular duct is more than in an oval or round spiral. In comparison, the perimeter of a spiral round duct of equal volume is only 41 inches, or about 15 percent less. A 12 X 12-inch rectangular duct has a perimeter of 48 inches. These factors all add resistance to the air flowing through rectangular ducts.ĭo the Math: A final way that resistance to air flow is found in the rectangular duct is by the fact that there is more surface area in a rectangle than a circle having the same area. Also, a rectangular duct usually has shallow diagonal creases in each of the sides to stiffen the duct and prevent it from flexing when the air turns on and off. When the duct is assembled, the seam is often secured by the use of screws. Rectangular ducts are often transported to the job site unassembled as flat stock because it is easier to load them in a truck and they take up less space. Depending on how it was made, it might even have two seams in opposite corners running along its length. Seams, Screws and Creases, Oh My: A rectangular duct has a seam that runs its entire length. Static pressure refers to the resistance that faces both the air flowing through the system and the components of the system itself. Here is one area where spiral ductwork is superior to rectangular because it minimizes static pressure. Just as blood flowing through our vascular system can be restricted by various kinds of blockages, so can the air in our HVAC system be restricted by features inside it. Whether we’re talking summer or winter, cooling or heating – we want air to flow through the ductwork smoothly and efficiently. In your HAC system, air flowing through the ductwork with as little hindrance is what it’s all about. ![]() There are several reasons spiral ducts are better. Here is our reasoning and the conclusion we’ve made in the rectangular ductwork vs spiral ductwork debate.
